  Name: Kahran Ramsus

□ Journal: 0808191ramses

□ Series: Xenogears

□ Canon point:  Chapter 16: Desert Despair after his encounter with Fei (The Demon of Elru)

□ History:

Twenty-four years ago, due to Krelian’s scientific ingenious, Ramsus was given life to in a nanoreactor. He is an artificial life form designed to be the copy of Emperor Cain and therefore he possesses a portion of Cain’s genetics along with the nanomachine colonies giving him his homunculus form. So for the majority of the first stage of his life he was a blob thing enthroned in a nanoreactor. He’s remarkably intelligent at this stage possessing the ability to understand complex thoughts, things that were said to him and about him, but he was also misled at this time of development.  Ramsus, or at this point 0808191 Ramses, was led to believe via Krellian that he would be the Artificial Contact, a superior being. Unbeknownst to him his sole purpose in his creation was to eliminate Emperor Cain. Because Cain was so old and so powerful he couldn’t be eliminated using normal means. Only Cain could destroy himself and that was the reason Ramsus was given life, his creation was a manipulation from the moment of his birth.

Roughly ten years into Ramsus’s development Miang appears, Miang is one fraction of the Original Mother—the first female creation in Xenogears history who is the source of human creation. Miang has the special ability to manifest randomly in the bodies of all women within the Xenogears world when her previous body (or the previous incarnation of Miang) dies. At this time Miang manifests in the body of Karen Wong who is the mother of Fei Fong Wong. She noticed that her child was the true Contact. After finding this out she met with Krelian and told him that she had the true Contact, making Ramsus’s existence meaningless and that he should be disposed of, which he was. He was abandoned in Solaris’s dumping grounds and left to either scramble for his own survival or perish. Scramble it was, which led to him coming across a boy named Kahran Bekker by chance, he killed the 15 year old Bekker and stole his body fusing his own homunculus shell with the one he had stolen. His fusion gave the body a physical appearance that is a cross between Emperor Cain and Kahran Bekker. He then gave himself the name Kahran Ramsus and using Bekker’s ID he entered the school at Jugend. While at Jugend he met Miang 0996 and two other men he considers his best friends Sigurd and Hyuuga.

He meets Jesiah and they form the Elements with Sigurd and Hyuuga. At this point Ramsus possesses revolutionary ideals for Solaris, particularly for its military force called Gebler. People should be seen not for their class or their status in society, but for their ability and their talent. So Ramsus’s standards for choosing individuals for the elite Element branch of Gebler was based entirely on skill and talent alone. These ideals were shaped by his own struggles and abandonment, that even though he was thrown in the trash he was able to come this far on his own and not through breeding or status. Solaris has a class system based on hair color, eye color, and purity that Ramsus detests.

Sigurd abandoned the Elements (and in Ramsus’s mind abandoned him as well) a year after its inception for several reasons. One being that his intention to stay in Solaris, after being captured and held prisoner for so long, was to steal technology, his second reason for leaving was to save his little half-brother and cousin, and his final reason had to do with Ramsus’s ideals having gone off track. Ramsus became more obsessed with increasing his own rank and proving himself that his own ideals took a back seat to his position which is part of the whole Ramsus dichotomy, acceptance of others based on their skills v.s. desperation to demonstrate that he is not trash. Ramsus could have stopped Sigurd, but he did not, he still considered him a friend and he wouldn’t wish to see him incarcerated or worse. He did call Sigurd a traitor for his abandonment, however. Not long after Sigurd’s departure is he followed by Hyuuga and Jesiah leaving Ramsus alone to the manipulations of Miang and Krelian.

The quelling of Elru is one of Ramsus’s major missions, it is also when he meets Fei/Id/The Demon of Elru for the first time and when he meets The Demon of Elru all of his past resentments and issues resurface and they turn into an intense hatred. His mission orders were to quell the inhabitants of Elru as the stirrings of rebellion had been boiling for quite some time. During his mission he encounters child Fei wearing the somewhat distorted face of his alternate personality Id. Id possesses berserker like abilities making him remarkably powerful, but for the most part he is impossible to control. During his encounter with Id he is gravely injured, if Ramsus had been a lesser being he might have died in the encounter, but he barely survived. The terrible experience haunts his dreams into the present with nightmares. After his encounter with Id, at some point, he meets Dominia, one of the very few survivors of Id’s destruction of Elru. He sees that she has talent, becomes her sponsor, and enters her into the school at Jugend. Dominia eventually becomes an Element along with Kelvena, the cyborg Talone, and the de facto leader Seraphita. Ramsus also saved Seaphita, a demi-human, from being processed into the soylent system as food or a Wels (monster). The new Elements were hand chosen by Ramsus himself.

• Present

Just before the start of the game Ramsus is given the position Guardian Angel and Gebler Commander. So he is one of the highest ranking officers in all of Solaris with the exception of Cain, the eight remaining members of the Gazel Ministry, and Krelian.

□ Personality: Ramsus is a very complex individual given the nature of his being and the progression of his life, combine it all with the mechanisms of those around him and you have a recipe for an imbalanced creature. Ramsus is a being with deep feelings of such inadequacy that he can at times be cruel, self-pitying, and unreasonable, he hides it behind a mask of condescension and achievement, but at his depth he has the capacity to care for others around him with profound loyalty. These are his most defining characteristics. He is the embodiment of the Cain Complex, particularly when it comes to his rivalry with Fei Fong Wong--which is highly appropriate given that Fei’s original incarnation was Able and Ramsus is a copy of Cain. There you have it, Cain and Able with Fei being the favored contacts and Ramsus being less favored and disposed of.

On the surface Ramsus is like a lake undisturbed, he is confident, competent, and he has very little tolerance for shenanigans and failure—particularly if those who fail him do so with force as opposed to using their brains. We can see this early on with Vanderkum, a commander at the Aveh military base. When attempting to acquire a dangerous Gear his reliance upon canons and brute force lost him 4 cruisers, 6 attackers, and quite a few lives. This was just after Ramsus had taken his own position in Gebler so he was absolutely livid. He stripped Vanderkum down verbally and relieved him of his position. So it is clear from the off that Ramsus has very little patience for failure and this can be attributed to a couple of factors: one being that he had just taken up the highest position in Gebler and another being an attribution of his own insecurities. Having been tossed into the trashed and ridiculed by Krelian, Miang, and the Gazel Ministry as a failure and worthless for so long he spends a great deal of time trying to prove himself to others. Basically he wants to silence the derision and prove that he is a superior life form, which is difficult to do when your subordinates screw up so spectacularly.

Ramsus also has disdain for disloyalty and people who acquire power without earning it which can be seen in his interactions with Shakan. Even though Shakan is an agent of Solaris, with all of Gebler backing him as Minister of Aveh, Ramsus holds very little esteem for him and sees Shakan as nothing more than a puppet. In their first interaction he more or less ignores Shakan and has very little interest in discussing anything with the man that doesn’t concern his own interests. During the opening ceremony just before the martial arts tournament in Aveh, a tournament held at a festival that celebrates the founding of the country, he spoke of the tournament and the country as if it was his. Ramsus found this impudent considering that Aveh was not even Shakan’s country, he wasn’t born there, he was merely an advisor to the King. A King he willingly betrayed in order to usurp.

Ramsus’s loyalty issues walk hand in hand with his abandonment issues; he was abandoned by Krelian in the first stage of his development. So whenever he develops relationships with others those relationships must be founded on loyalty, it’s why he cares for Miang, because she stayed with him and she was “loyal” to him. In the end she wasn’t, she was just staying beside him so that she could manipulate him into a series of events, but he misconstrued that for loyalty. He is also more lenient with his Elements and more respectful towards them because they are unwavering in their loyalty to him, even though they do not always succeed against their enemies. Ramsus also had a deep affection for Sigurd, Hyuuga, and Jesiah—but they too left him over time further contributing to his abandonment issues. He took Sigurd’s abandonment the hardest and it is implied that he was probably closest to him than the others, but when Sigurd left he left for a few reasons 1. his half-brother and cousin were in danger 2. Ramsus was losing sight of his ideals and 3. He only remained in Solaris so that he could steal technology. On Sigurd’s way out Ramsus called him a traitor, but he didn’t stop him from leaving. He could have, but Sigurd still had Ramsus’s loyalty and his love which isn’t something he can easily discard when he becomes close to an individual. Even years later when Ramsus is forced in to conflict with Sigurd and his men he avoids using force if he can help it, telling one of his officers to patch his name through to the Yggdrasil, a ship that Sigurd is second in command of. He wanted them to surrender as opposed to having to fight.

It was mentioned that Ramsus had ideals and he still has ideals, but in his earlier years those ideals were nobler in reason which is why Sigurd, Hyuuga, and Jesiah decided to follow him in the first place. After graduating Jugend and forming the Elements Ramsus became revolutionary in his ideas and concepts about status in Solaris, specifically the military portion, Gebler. He believed that status should be based on skill and talent, not on blood purity and birthright which was a prevalent notion in Solaris. This is because Ramsus had to crawl his way to the top on his own steam and with his own skills; it’s why he looks down on others who attain power they didn’t earn. Sigurd and the others admired this idea; they believed it could change the very foundations of Solaris and the world, but over time his ideals were superseded by the hunger to prove himself and to gain status and recognition. This desire is pushed further due to being supplanted by Fei as the ultimate being which is something that is always, obsessively sitting in the back of his thoughts. Now his ideals have not disappeared entirely, he still believes in skill over purity which is why he hand picks all of his elites to join the Elements, none of them being chosen for their purity: Domina and Seraphita are demi-human and Talone is a cyborg.

The majority of what defines Ramsus’s character is his relationship with Fei. Whenever he encounters Fei or even hears his name all of Ramsus’s cool collectedness melts away to reveal his insecurities and his desperation to defeat Fei. Ramsus’s has defined his existence by surpassing Fei simply because of his own rejection in the first stages of his creation. He was led to believe that he was a superior life-form before this boy came along and ruined all of his prospects. Ramsus is very catastrophic in his thinking and he becomes a more irrational individual, even his emotions become unstable showing his lack of emotional maturity that he was unable to develop. He takes risks that aren’t calculated and careful, he flies off the handle, and when his failures against Fei are pointed out he becomes sullen and desperate. The Gazel Ministry often point out his failure against Id/Fei as the Demon of Elru, when he first encountered Fei in Elru and was utterly defeated leaving him with the humiliation of the loss and nightmares of the trauma. His entire self-worth is wrapped up in the concept of his creation and when he discovers his true purpose as the clone of Cain meant only to eliminate Cain he becomes depressed and self-depreciating.  When measuring his self-worth against Fei or against his own purpose Ramsus’s moods can become very whimsical, it’s exactly where his lack of emotional growth reveals itself because it puts him in a time lock, he can’t get past certain events that happened in a certain time frame in his life leaving him stuck in that emotional stage of his development especially when he is forced to encounter his triggers. It can even make him forget that he is a man of sensibilities, he can become almost cruel, going so far as injuring others who are standing between him and the individual responsible for everything wrong with his life, this bane of his existence, Fei.

Ramsus has several good points as well, some of them having been mentioned: he is incredibly loyal and cares deeply for those he is loyal to, he has ideals and believes in skill as opposed to status, but he also has a sense of decorum when it comes to handling his enemies. We see this when we are first introduced to Ramsus who was talking to Shakan about his captive, Margie. Margie is the Holy Mother of Nisan and she was in possession of one half of a treasure that Ramsus was looking for. Shakan was holding her hostage and he told Ramsus that she was a “strong willed girl.” Ramsus responded by saying “you’re not being rough with her, are you?” Another example can be seen when Domina almost attacks a traitorous Elly on Ramsus’s ship, she is stopped by Miang who says “such acts will not be allowed under Ramsus’s command…No matter the reason!”  Which just furthers this idea that Ramsus’s sensibilities are refined enough that he can’t tolerate the use of excessive force, even if it is against his enemies, particularly when the situation is either unfair or the balance of power is not evenly distributed. He simply has no taste for vulgar barbarism as an intelligent creature, of couse decorum be damned where Fei is directly involved.

□ Age: Due to being prematurely ejected from the nonreactor Kahran has at least three ages, one is the physical age of the body he stole from Kahran Bekka, one is the age of his Homunculus body (the body he fused with Bekka), and one is his emotional age. His physical Bekka body age is approximately 29, his Homunculus age is 24 and his emotional age is unknown, but it is considerably younger given that he was never given a chance to develop emotional maturity in spite of his physical and intellectual maturity.

□ Gender: He identifies as male

□ Appearance: Kahran is a very odd looking character in a handsome kind of way. His appearance is a blend of Cain from who he was modeled after and Bekka the boy he killed and who’s body he stole so Kahran doesn’t really have an appearance he would consider his own, it’s all stolen or pieced together from Cain’s DNA. In spite of this however, Kahran is a rather tall man, standing at approximately 6’3” with a very large and ideal masculine build. He has fair hair of a very peculiar color, it’s not quite blonde, note quite white…the only way to describe the color would be silvery beige (told you he’s peculiar) and he has goldish/yellowish colored eyes, he has a medium-fair complexion, and he can usually be seen wearing a stern expression. He dons the typical Solarian uniform, though given his title as one of the Guardian Angels of Solaris and the highest ranking commanding officer of Gebler his uniform is obviously more elaborate and imposing. Difficult to describe without images due to the detail, but in Solaris the under layer of any uniform is usually form-fitted, he also wears an unusual, high-neck, coat with changeable colors and a gemstone in the middle of the chest area, boots, gloves (this doesn’t do the design justice really). He’s rarely seen out of it unless he’s in bed, then Ramsus strips all the way down to his black briefs…yes, it’s canon.

□ Abilities/Powers:

• Ramsus pretty much ticks all of the boxes for superhuman in areas of enhanced strength, reflexes, speed, and endurance.

• Ramsus also has an interesting biology that has a great deal to do with the fact that A. he is a clone of Emperor Cain, and B. he was given life inside of a nanoreactor, meaning that to some degree his body contains Nanomachine Colonies. It enables him to regenerate from wounds and illnesses that would most certainly kill another human being (as evidenced by him taking on the Demon of Elru without a Gear and surviving the encounter) and it also provides him with longevity (of course the genes he inherited from Cain also provide him with longevity).

• Adomopathy is the ability to replicate movements or actions after witnessing it once or twice. Ramsus is a fast learner, he could understand what was being said to him or about him even in the first stages of his development and when he was tossed out he inherently knew what he had to do in order to survive and that meant mimicking those around him. As he is a homunculus in a human body he had to adapt to human quirks and he’s become quite an expert.

• Ether Ability it is like magic that the people of the Xenogears world use, apparently it is a manifestation of one’s request from the Zohar. Some people are more exceptional than others and Ramsus is considered one of the best wielders of Ether, otherwise he would not have been entered into Jugend, he would not have been able to form the elite Elements, he would not have achieved the highest commanding post in Gebler, or status as Guardian Angel. The extent of his abilities is unknown but he has a few attacks that are shown in game: Terra Flare, Megaflare, and Nereid Cyclone. It is assumed that Ramsus can use all four elements to his advantage, but he leans more heavily on fire based elements.

• Expert Swordsman—and in combat Ramsus tends to rely heavily on his use of the sword as opposed to his Ether, even his Gears come equipped with a sword. He wields a sword that looks very much like a rapier in the game.

□ Personal Items:

• His Solarian (Guardian Angel) uniform

• His Solarian forged sword

• -Drive- a Solarian concocted performance enhancing psychotic dru
